“Résilience”
Resilience is one’s ability to return to a state of equilibrium following past traumas. It is observed in individuals, groups of people and even ecosystems. In psychology, resilience is known to trigger when risk and protective factors meet. That meeting of factors is for example the clash of trauma with our own personality and/or our social and family environment.
I wanted to create a living organism. Roots of a tree, cellular shapes, stems, leaves and petals symbolize identity and personality. This organism has sustained trauma on the upper level of the sculpture which is made evident by the scorched marks. Trauma does not heal, we just learn to live with it. The thin stems growing out of the flowers represent the emotional bonds. They go beyond trauma to renew and rebuild the whole structure, allowing it to keep growing despite the damage.
