“Wanderer”
The quest for selfhood, of what defines us, is a subject we all have to contend with : defining our identity is a conundrum that follows us our whole life. I wanted to materialize this quest with a sculpture named “Wanderer”.
A wanderer is someone who is constantly traveling and living intense experiences. He has no identity and is an anonymous being.
My wanderer wears a mask. In our western societies identity is communicated through our faces, which could be considered as the final protection of our intimate self. By erasing the wanderer’s face with a mask, its facial features disappear : the individual is freed of the constraints of designated identity and the mask, paradoxically, acts as a freeing force that helps one reveal their true self.
The wanderer is dressed with jigsaw puzzle pieces. This type of puzzle is a long and thoughtful process in which patience and observation are key to revealing a holistic harmony.
Recycled steel, arc welding.
